From the Prison Reform Trust
21,937 prisoners, was from a minority ethnic group. This compares to around one in 10 of the general population.

Out of the British national prison population, 10% are black and 6% are Asian. For black Britons this is significantly higher than the 2.8% of the general population they represent.

Overall black prisoners account for the largest number of minority ethnic prisoners (49%).

At the end of June 2014, 28% of minority ethnic prisoners were foreign nationals.

According to the Equality and Human Rights Commission, there is now greater disproportionality in the number of black people in prisons in the UK than in the United States.

Wow there are some statistics to think about!

I'm struggling to see what Letwin did wrong.

His comments as far as I can see were a bit careless but not racist.

This whole furore just demonstrates how difficult it is to have any sort of intelligent conversation about social problems specific to a particular ethnic minority, whether it be black boys on north london estates or pakistani taxi drivers in Rochdale.

There are also problems specific to young white men in run down areas but these are apparently open for discussion for the obvious reason that nobody can shout 'racist!'.

10% of the prison population is black yet only 3% of the UK population is black, so yes, I would say that prima facie there are some specific problems.

A8: You just illustrated my point about context. The "tragedy" remark was about not being able to put him on trial. Wouldn't you rather all Bin Laden types got to spend decades in solitary in a supermax jail?

Where do i start? Hanging out with Hamas supporters for a start. Calling bin Ladens death a tragedy is another.
Abbott ought to apologise too. Says a lot about Corbyn

A8

I've scrolled down this thread and you've repeatedly suggested that Corbyn should "apologise" but I haven't seen you say what he should apologise for.

Personally I think McDonnell's comments about celebrating the IRA and Letwin's comments which are clearly unambiguously racist indicate two people with such huge errors of judgement that neither should be in front line politics. The fact both are still in front line politics says a lot about both Corbyn and Cameron.

However, please clarify what Corbyn should apologise for.

Should Abbott apologise?

So let's get this right. The labour government released him on health grounds. He arrives home and jumps out of his wheelchair?

Pinochet was under house arrest in the UK before he was released on health grounds by Jack Straw without facing trial.
Home Secretary Straw overruled a House of Lords decision to extradite Pinochet to face trial in Spain.
Pinochet returned to Chile on 3 March 2000. His first act when landing in Santiago's airport was to triumphantly get up from his wheelchair to the acclaim of his supporters.

Can we add this to the 'needing an apology' list?

And by the way ray she was wrong to publicly support him and she should have apologised.

Now considering I agree that letwin and thatcher were wrong when will you condemn Abbott and Corbyn?

She hardly harboured him when he was under house arrest.

Is Corbyn apolosing for being friends with Hama's or the IRA?

But while she was alive, did she apologise for harbouring a terrorist and mass murderer?

After8 7:13 Fri Jan 1
Re: Oliver Letwin - daft racist?
She's dead. Corbyn though can apologise though can't he?

This is the problem with you ray. You see everything through the prism of labour good Tories bad.

Letwin has apologised for his racist comments. If he stood by them I'd want him sacked. So would most people.

Diane abbot has also made racist comments. So as you're so keen to criticise letwin why the double standard?

And if we want the dead to go round apologising too then Harold Laski, chairman of the Labour Party in 1946, the era that many a nostalgic Labourite views as the high point of their party, argued that ‘the time is surely coming… when society will look upon the production of a weakling as a crime in itself’ needs to also apologise.

The fucking scary thing is that Oliver Letwin, and his third division mind, has been influencing our government for 30 years. In what kind of world is that okay? Oliver fucking Letwin. We should be ashamed.

Nailed on that pretty soon someone will demand (DEMAND) the prosecution of all the people involved in the production of 60s/70s TV shows like "Love Thy Neighbour", "In Sickness & In Health" & "Dad's Army", and, as for those who even thought of giving airtime to "The Comedians" & "Wheeltapper's & Shunter's Social Club" should be cast out of society and into isolation for 40 years to ensure the corruption of their genes is wiped out forever from the pool of humanity.

McDonnell

It's about time we started honouring those people involved in the armed struggle. It was the bombs and bullets and sacrifice made by the likes of Bobby Sands that brought Britain to the negotiating table. The peace we have now is due to the action of the IRA.

It looks pretty unambiguous to me.
